Time to Take to the Streets
The Fourth of July weekend is coming up and progressives all over Maine should take the occasion to celebrate Independence. We need to march shoulder to shoulder to show Maine that we support peace, and justice, and true democracy. Two of the best ways to do that are by taking to the streets and marching in the big Independence Day parades in Bar Harbor and Bath.
The Bar Harbor Parade kicks off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, and the Bath Parade begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 4. From all indications the weather will be terrific both days, so there will be thousands of people watching these parades. Most of these folks will be from Maine. It’s important that we put on a good showing and get our message across.
I invite you to march with me and the Maine Green Independent Party or the Mount Desert Island Peace and Justice unit during the Bar Harbor parade on Saturday, July 3. And I urge you to join with other progressives and peace and justice supporters in Bath on Sunday, July 4.
In Bar Harbor on Saturday, we need to line up between 9 and 9:30 a.m. The Green Party unit will line up on Park Street, alongside the athletic field, near the intersection of Park and School Streets. Bring your own signs if you want, or we’ll have signs for my state senate campaign as well as the Green 10 Key values. The MDI Peace and Justice Unit will line up on Lower Main Street, south of Park Street.

On Sunday, July 4, in Bath you’re invited to gather at noon at the Addams-Melman House (212 Centre St.) and move from there to the usual parade start position on Lincoln St. by the cemetery. The Bath P&J parade placement number is 80. The unit will have two big puppets, as well as signs. The Navy will be having the crew of the Trident nuclear submarine USS Maine in the parade celebrating this nuclear weapons delivery system, so it’s important to have a large contingent to show that people want peace more than they do war. Marchers are encouraged to wear any combination of red, white, or blue.
